Tremors 2: Aftershocks
USA, 1996
[S.S. Wilson]
Fred Ward, Christopher Gartin, Michael gross, Helen Shaver
Action / Sci-Fi / Comedy

Cue Jaws theme music, because the tireless predator known only as sequel is coming to rip apart another movie! But not this one. 7 years after the original, Fred Ward is back as Earl Bassett along with his pal Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) to do some more Graboid hunting. The monsters from the original Tremors are tearing up Mexican oil fields and their workers, and it's up to Earl and Burt, along with Grady (Gartin), a young taxi driver who idolises Earl and is in desperate need of cash and a career change, who are hired to hunt them down. Helen Shaver plays Kate White, a sophisticated and sexy scientist with a strong personality. All goes well, until the monsters decide to throw in a few surprises.

This straight-to-video movie has a much lower budget and smaller cast but that aside, you are in for one hell of a ride. Ward carries the movie superbly in the lead role, slightly more seasoned and much wiser from the original. Gross is fantastic too, with more screen time he is given the chance to shine and practically makes the movie. Gartin injects some youth into the cast in place of the missing Bacon, who has since moved on to bigger things, and does a fine job creating an original and fun character of his own. Throw in a love interest for Ward in the form of Shaver (
Poltergeist: the Legacy), who performs well, rather than some busty bimbo which could easily have been cast (This is a Jaws rip-off after all).

True the effects are sometimes ropey, but these people show that you dont need big budgets and gimmicks to produce a good movie, just fine acting and an even better storyline with plenty of surprises to keep you on the edge of your seat. All of which results in a fantastic movie. Its a crying shame that this didnt get more investment and theatrical release, as it beats most Hollywood blockbusters hands down. You think Im exaggerating? Rent or, even better, buy the thing and see for yourself.
