The Transformers: The Movie
USA, 1986
[Nelson Shin]
Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack, Orson Welles, Eric Idle
Action / Animation / Sci-Fi

For any man now in his early twenties the Transformers were the in-toy when he was a kid. You can forget every craze either before or since as they were it, running the full gamut of comics (which were surprisingly dark and morbid for 10 year olds), toys, cartoons and in this: a full-scale animated movie. Fitting in with the comic timeline it introduced the new breed of characters (and with it money spinning toys and merchandise) whilst killing off some of the older hero's, most noticeably Optimus Prime and Megatron, both mortally wounded in a titanic struggle for Earth. It also brought to notice one of the most terrifying bad guys the big screen has ever seen; Unicron. A blatant rip off of the Star Wars Death Star he may be but with full consciousness, a planet-eating capability and Orson Welles voice he fills the role of terror-incarnate perfectly. At least if you're a kid.

Finding this movie only recently I found myself transported back in time and I loved it. The plot is interesting enough, the characters excellent and the voice artists (including Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle, Judd Nelson and, of course, Welles in his last ever role) surprisingly impressive. Oddly for a kids movie many characters die, some horribly, and I would exercise discretion before watching, especially for those with a weak stomach. For the rest of you though I can only hope that you'll watch it, at least for old times sake. It's great.
