Top Gun
USA, 1986
[Tony Scott]
Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards
Action / Romance

One of the first of many Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer big budget flicks, and a classic that should be in every video collection. This movie is so Eighties! It is actually quite embarrassing that the fashion and haircuts at one point were in fact fashionable, and to see a barely pubescent Val Kilmer sucking in his pigeon chest, strutting around in a towel with a perfectly formed flat-top hairdo. You cant help but laugh!

Anyway, the movie, if you still dont know the plot, is about two pilots (Tom Cruise and E.Rs Anthony Edwards, with hair!) and their bid to become
Top Gun at the US Navys prestigious fighter weapons school, while Tom tries to pull a foxy civilian instructor (McGillis), ahh who doesnt go for the older woman?

Thats the basic plot with some high-octane, aerial (fake) combat (with some real stuff at the finale). The camerawork is superb for the high-flying stuff, taking your breath away for real! At the end you just so wanna be like young Tom getting his leg over in a flight suit. One of the best action flicks of the past 30 or so years, a great one to snuggle up to with your girl. Oh, watch out for a small role by a very young Meg Ryan.
