Spy Game
USA, 2001
[Tony Scott]
Brad Pitt, Robert Redford, Catherine McCormack
Action /

Robert Redford and Brad Pitt star in this story about the relationship between a spy and his CIA mentor. The film starts with Pitt, seemingly acting alone, being captured and thrown in a Chinese jail, an event which threatens to become an international incident and upset ongoing trade negotiations. The CIA begin a comprehensive exploration of Pitts career so far and so call on Redford for information, but even though it's his last day on the job, he still knows to be careful about exactly what he tells anyone.

Much of the movie is made up of three long flashback sequences establishing the development of the two spies relationship. The rest is a strangely unhurried race against time to resolve the whole affair as smoothly as possible. Pitt is as good as he always is in this kind of role, and Redford is still a quality performer so theres no disappointments there. The storyline is enjoyable throughout the timeline jumping but is a little limp at the end, with the intended climax being something of a disappointment and wrapping things up too neatly. Oh and once again the American military are shown to be far more effective than they, or indeed any force, are. Ignoring that minor fact,
Spy Game is a solid, enjoyable film and worth a watch.
