A Simple Plan

A Simple Plan headlines with the believable Bill Paxton, the versatile Billy Bob Thornton, and the adaptable Bridget Fonda. This is a well directed film with a great character study that will not disappoint.

Intrigue enters immediately as a plane crash occurs. Three men, astonished at the scene, run over in a Good Samaritan fashion only to find a lifeless pilot and a ludicrous amount of money. From a mere plot perspective, thats all you need to know to understand that what happens next is a series of betrayals, lies, secrets, plots, schemes and murder among other evil attributes.

Set somewhere in the Midwest, the backdrop to the film is ironically snow. Yes, you know that beautiful powdery white substance which is often symbolic of innocence? Well, nothing could be further from the truth surrounding this consequential thriller/drama. Sam Raimi even goes as far as to introduce the audience to the prototypical husband (Paxton) &.wife (Fonda) team set in Middle America with the proverbial bun in oven and all. Hank & Sarah Mitchell make for a believable expecting couple who find their collective values and integrities compromised once they are presented with a life altering decision.

The contrast of human emotion in this film is remarkable and the essence is captured throughout the story as characters shift with each turn of events. You get a sense of how elusive the American Dream can be before and after the money & snow play out their respective Oscar Worthy roles.  Whats also amazing about
A Simple Plan is the complexity and corruption that stems forth as building blocks creating an awesome series of cause & effect scenes. As youre watching this film, you cant help but be reminded of an old clich which Ill refrain from typing (hint: it has to do with money and evil).

Although this movie is ten years old, its lessons are timeless and Billy Bob Thornton is simply marvelous! Theres not much more that I can tell you other than the fact that this is a must see and shame on you if you havent already. In fact, what have you been doing for the past ten years?
