The Negotiator USA, 1998 [F. Gary Gray] Samuel L. Jackson, Kevin Spacey, David Morse, John Spencer, Paul Giamatti Action / Drama |
Good film with a strong cast which, though not as intricately plotted as the similar L.A. Confidential, still manages to deliver enough surprises and whodunnit action to maintain interest. As it contains a fairly expansive cast of police, FBI etc, each with their own reasons for wanting Samuel L. Jackson either dead or alive, you never really know until the end who's doing what and why. Several characters seem very much intwined in the alleged framing of Jackson yet end up innocent whilst others, neither obviously nor covertly involved, become prime suspects. The pacing is just about right as it's not a straight Bruckheimer-style shoot-em-up and tension is maintained throughout. All in all good to see on TV but I doubt whether I'd pay money to see it at the cinema. |
