Mickey Blue Eyes
USA, 1999
[Kelly Makin]
Hugh Grant, James Caan, Jeanne Tripplehorn, James Fox
Comedy / Crime

One of many unspectacular light comedies that Hugh Grant has made while trying to make an impact on Hollywood in a non-British movie. Mickey Blue Eyes sees him once again playing a foppish toff, this time an auctioneer who finds out that his fiance's father is big in the local Mafia. She will only marry him if he doesn't let himself get caught up in her extended family, something he is more than happy to agree to. However the family themselves have other ideas and go to great lengths to help out their new son, but obviously they expect favours to be returned, especially when they realise just how useful a place an auction house is for laundering mob money.

This is a solid comic romance with Grant depending on his usual confused, slightly overused, nice guy routine. James Caan is quite good too as the prospective father-in-law and the rest of the cast is made up of the usual Mafioso stereotypes. The jokes for the most part hit their targets, with a couple of laugh out louders as Grant tries to assume his new persona of hitman
Mickey Blue Eyes, including the standard accent. Despite the mandatory obvious happy ending you always get free with this kind of flick, it's surprisingly, if uninspiringly, entertaining.
