Being a complete ninny I am far too scared to try a ouija board myself so I was quite excited when I saw there was a horror film being made on this rather exciting medium. The film opens with some London students knocking cool dialogue back and forth in a way that people only really do in Hollyoaks, and makes you wonder why they were ever friends in the first place. Bored in a nightclub, they retreat to a disused part of the club to use a ouija board. Quickly they make contact with something which spells out all die.
Immediately after, one of them dies in a horrific fashion, being dragged around by an unseen and fiery force on the roof of the club. This lets say puts the shits up the rest of them, and they go home to work out what the hell is happening. The mystically informed one amongst them, Lucy (Thompson) susses out that they have released an evil spirit a Djinn and it cant be free until they are all dead.

What would be a one-dimensional plot quickly gets some mystery which holds you through the twists and turns without boredom. However, they dont have much depth as ideas and some people you hope are pivotal to the plot in some fascinating way turn out to be pretty useless. For those who like a good scare, this has a good few satisfyingly nerve-wracking scenes, but the film in its entirety never really succeeds in getting to you. Nice to see Working Title tackling something thats not a mockney criminal romp or a romantic comedy, and the ouija board is an under-used subject in horror films, but sadly it didnt quite do it for me.
