Life Stinks
USA, 1991
[Mel Brooks]
Mel Brooks, Lesley Anne Warren, Jeffrey Tambor
Comedy

If youre fed up with the state of the world and are in desperate need for a pick-me-up, you can't go far wrong with the works of Mel Brooks. Ok, Life Stinks isnt up there with Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs or even The Elephant Man, but by God, does it come close!

It tells the tale of Goddard Bolt (Brooks), a self made millionaire who wants to become richer still. He meets up with the devious Vance Crasswell (Tambor), who wagers a bet with Bolt over some prime LA land that is up for auction and which Goddard desperately wants for development. Unfortunately, the land is over-run with homeless people! The bet is thus set; can Bolt survive as a destitute for 30 days? If he can, Crasswell will stay out of the bidding for the land, thus ensuring Bolt will win... and that's where the fun begins.

I wont spoil the plot, but put it this way its the longest 30 days of his life! The part where hes in hospital at the end is truly hysterical! The supporting cast try to keep up with Brooks manic direction, but to me it's only Lesley-Anne Warren (portraying the streetwise manic-depressive, Molly) and Rudy deLuca (playing a man who is convinced hes J. Paul Getty! (in scenes familiar to
The Three Stooges fans) who can manage to stay the pace and not become merely supporting cast members.
