Fantasy / Romance

Tim Burton had the idea for this modern fairytale quite a long time before it actually made it onto the screen. Edward is the ultimate outsider, the boy who lives in the attic on his own, unable to touch anything due to the fact that he has scissors for hands. Johnny Depp completely tore up his poster boy image with this role and is the epitomy of confused innocence as Edward, who is welcomed into the local Avon lady's home when his creator dies and gradually becomes tolerated by society as they realise his creativity combined with his shears may come in handy. Unfortunately it all goes sour as he falls in love with cheerleader Winona Ryder but rejects the advances of the town gossip, who combines with Ryder's boyfriend to get revenge. Several strong performaces from both leads and supporting characters, along with the usual skewed set designs come together to nicely send up a middle America full of horrendous colour schemes and nosy housewives.

The story is sheer magic and Danny Elfman's score is perfect accompaniment. You can view Edward as a direct manifestation of Burton's own childhood or more widely apply it to the awkwardness that adolescents in general contend with. Instead what I would recommend is you set all that aside, let the beautiful story work it's way into your mind and enjoy a truly original and heartfelt movie
