Coyote Ugly USA, 2000 [David McNally] Piper Perabo, Adam Garcia, John Goodman, Tyra Banks Romance / Drama |
A New Jersey girl, Violet, moves away from her father to New York so that she can become a songwriter (well, the relationship between her father and her is unbelievable to begin with; hes so fat and shes so skinny that theres no way they can possibly be related by blood). Gorgeous, shy, and pretty well-acted Violet has trouble getting herself an agent, so she gets a job at notorious female-run bar Coyote Ugly. This bar where the girls whoopingly dance on the bar, flirt with customers and spray themselves with cold water, squealing with barely-concealed sexual confidence and delight every moment - is as much a horny male-created myth as the idea that we girls have pillow fights in our underwear and kiss each other for practice. I know, Ive worked in the same places and believe me, female bar staff only ever flirt with you for the tips. Well anyway, the bar gets rid of her inhibitions, she meets a guy, she worries about whether shell ever make it in this ol town and whether shell ever have papas approval.
Oh, write the script yourself. I only watched half of it, thats really all you need to watch, Im sure LeAnn Rimes comes in at the appropriate moment singing Cant Fight the Moonlight and gets Violet a career, followed by tearful scene of forgiveness with daddy. What youre watching this for is the gorgeous girls and the bar-room antics, both of which are great fun and come up to those expectations. Just dont come to this film with any others if you want female-bonding, chick-flick stuff with a bit more bite and humour, shove Dirty Dancing into the video player and give this a miss. |
