Cats & Dogs
USA, 2001
[Lawrence Guterman]
Jeff Goldblum, Elizabeth Perkins, Alec Baldwin
Action / Comedy / Family

From the trailer this movie could have been anticipated as the biggest of the year, and it could have been if they'd done it right. A secret war between Cats and Dogs that has been raging since the dawn of time. A battle for supremacy over pet owners fought in our very homes. Sounds great doesnt it? I thought it did.

Lou is a beagle bought by a mother (Perkins) to replace her sons missing dog, who is really a now-retired secret agent protecting the father (Goldblum), a professor working on an antidote for dog allergy, from the evil Cats led by Mr Tinkles. With me so far? Good. Lou is an innocent puppy who is now forced to take over the reins, or should I say leash (ha, ha, ha... hmm), along with a team of local hounds to make sure that the cat race is unsuccessful

Wow! This sounds great! A movie with a great premise, which has the potential to rival the wit and visual effects of
Shrek and Toy Story! Dear oh dear no. Too much slapstick, too much syrup, boring dialogue and a predictable storyline jam-packed with clichs. Yes, the effects are great, mixing real animals with animatronics and CGI seamlessly, yet they are not used to their full potential. The story tries to give off too many morals and everything is sugar coated (inches thick) in this world.

The cast - Goldblum should never do another comedy ever again. Ever. Perkins is good as the mother, but maybe Im just being nice because shes sexy. However the voice cast fares much better, while its still far from perfection the one saving grace in this movie is Mr. Tinkles, an absolute delight to watch and genuinely funny, especially his ransom video tape. This is one for the kiddies Im afraid.
