The Bourne Identity
USA, 2002
[Doug Liman]
Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Brian Cox, Clive Owen
Action / Thriller

The film is adapted from a book by Robert Ludlum and a TV movie from the 80s with the same name. In much the same vein as many other action/spy films, such as the James Bond and Mission: Impossible movies, you are taken on a rollercoaster adventure across Europe. Jason Bourne (Damon) is found floating in the sea off France with two bullet holes in his back and a bank account number planted inside him in a special laser chip. As he is suffering amnesia, he attempts to find out his identity and work out why a series of law enforcement agents are trying to kill him. He teams up with unlikely sidekick Marie (Potente) when he needs a car, and a chase ensues across Switzerland and France, with most of the action taking place in Paris. Gradually Jason discovers his past and the reason he is being hunted down.

The comparisons between this and other recent films will always be apparant, but despite all this it does have an atmosphere of its own and keeps you gripped for the full 2 hours. Unfortunately cliches abound, and a lot of the story line seems just a little too convenient. All the same, some good acting and cinematography.
