Bad Taste
New Zealand, 1987
[Peter Jackson]
Terry Potter, Pete O'Herne, Doug Wren, Peter Jackson
Action / Horror / Comedy

Director Peter Jackson's big break came with this superbly executed amateur effort from his native New Zealand and seemingly starring only about a dozen people. Focusing on an alien invasion in a small town and humanity's reply, the sending in of 'The Boys', it's basically nothing more than an excuse to show copious amounts of hilarious gore sequences and, for some reason, dead seagulls. Everything about it is fantastic from the simple, fantasy plot (who wouldn't like to save the world with nothing more than automatic weapons and a chainsaw), excellent 'special effects' (the model work is brilliant but the death sequences are what is more impressive) and sheer 'loving every minute of this' enthusiasm from the cast.

Definitely not for the faint at heart Bad Taste features some of the most gratuitous goresplosions ever scene on screen. Practically everyone meets a horrible, gruesome death usually involving a chainsaw, knife or sub-machine gun and the blood and guts flow everywhere. Jackson himself created all the mock-organs/brains and their splattering is most enjoyable. It also features two of the best 'man kicked in groin' moments ever, I never knew a man could jump so high. Jackson is currently filming the
Lord of the Rings trilogy, a far cry from the likes of this and his other creation Braindead.
