America's Sweethearts
USA, 2001
[Joe Roth]

Comedy / Romance

Eddie and Gwen (Cusack and Zeta Jones) are (in this movies reality) something of a Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, an on and off-screen couple. Starring in a series of movies together, they have a huge following. That is until they break up. Now Gwens movies are a flop and a mentally unstable Eddie has exiled himself to a life of seclusion in a strange clinic. They are called upon to struggle through a publicity event for their last movie together, and it's up to Hollywood smooth talker (Crystal) to make sure everything goes to plan along with Gwens sister (Roberts), who has a soft spot for Eddie.

Of course, everything does not go according to plan and hilarity ensues, eventually. The movie starts out as dull and unoriginal, its a sort of
Notting Hill meets While You Were Sleeping, taking a long while for any real spark of humour and pace. While the cast are good, Crystal and Roberts in particular, Cusack and Jones dont seem to be that convincing. While Cusack has natural comedy timing, Jones tries to be a super bitch, but is still sexy as ever dammit! That aside, there really is nothing new to capture your attention in what is really quite an uneventful film. Oh, by the way, Christopher Walken does a fantastic cameo, which makes the ending very memorable.
