An American Werewolf in London
USA, 1981
[John Landis]

Horror / Comedy

This film is something everyone has to experience. I expect most will go back for more. The story is of two American backpackers who go walking on the moors somewhere in Yorkshire. They happen upon a pub in a tiny village, full of old men who don't take well to strangers. When they leave, the two guys get lost in the fog and are attacked by a fierce werewolf. One is killed, the other is left in hospital in London.

As he recovers, he is haunted by his dead friend who appears at various points in the film gradually decaying. When he leaves hospital with his new love interest - a nurse from the hospital - all appears to be going well until the full moon arrives and our lead character goes through one of the most gruesome metamorphosis scenes in any film ever, from naked human to hairy beast. He then goes on the rampage killing a score of innocent people. This repeats a few times before the police finally disapprove and catch up with him.

This film really is a howl all the way through. It is so unbelievable that you carry on watching till the end. Unfortunately as it was made in 1981 and had a low budget, the film quality is rather poor, but it is no reason not to watch. However don't watch alone at night with some of the heart-stopping scenes of terror that are included.
