Introduction:
Master program in chemistry (program studi magister ilmu kimia) at The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Indonesia has been established since 1990/1991 academic year. The initial program was founded through the authority of The Post-Graduate Program, University of Indonesia. However, most of educational processes were conducted under Department of Chemistry facilities.
The initial program which is lead by Prof. Soleh Kosela and Dr. Wahyudi Priyono offered two main specialization, namely, (1) "Hayati" (Natural Product, Organic and Bio Chemistry related expertise) and (2) "Non-Hayati" (Inorganic, Physical, and Analytical Chemistry related expertise). At the time being, (3) "Biotechnology Industry" is introduced as the third specialization. All the programs, basically, could be completed in four semesters (40 credit units) comprising of two semesters for the courses (30 credit units) and two other semesters for a seminar (2 credit units) and a research work and the final thesis (8 credit units).
Starting from 4 students enrolled at the opening of the program, then increase to the average of 10 students/year in the middle 90's and more than 20 students/year during the last three years. This may represent the growing popularity of the program. An internal efficiency of more than 25 % has been maintained since the last three years. A scholarship program has been arranged for the students who are (or will be) a state university employee through the TMPD (tunjangan menuju program doktor), URGE (university research graduate education), and DUE (development undergraduate education) programs. Similar scholarship program is also arranged through other scheme by other institutions (e.g. Department of Defend, Department of Health, and other institution, including private sector).
The operational process of the program basically has been maintaining by the faculty members of the Department of Chemistry. More than 27 active lecturers are registered, at the moment, in which 16 lecturers are the faculty of The Department of Chemistry; 5 lecturers are the faculty member within The University of Indonesia; and the rest are coming from the outside institution, such as LIPI (Indonesian Institute of Science), BATAN (Indonesian Atomic Energy Agency), LEMIGAS (Indonesian Institute of Petroleum), and BPPT (Indonesian Technological Assessment Agency). All of the lecturers are holding a doctor degree and five of them with the professor rank.
Having such staff composition, the program pray to a high commitment in its educational through a research. The staff are encouraged to treat a final year student as their research staff and get involve in problem solving and approaching the research problem which is a part of the staff 's grand research interest. As a results it is not surprising that the thesis work of the students contribute to the original work that lead to a publication in international reputable journal. A research in natural product chemistry, for example, has successfully isolated and characterized novel compounds which undoubtedly worth for international publication (see list of publication). More over, several staffs have been awarding for a multi year research team scheme grant, such as URGE Research Team Grant, Hibah Bersaing, and RUT.
