Boxing Day gift: Freebie at the zoo

By Roman Zakaluzny

Boxing Day figures to be a real zoo -- and not just at the mall.

Free admission for the Metro Toronto Zoo's annual Christmas Treats Walk promises to be easy on the pocket book and fun for families, said zoo spokesman Lynda Keith.

And getting there will be made a little easier thanks to the TTC, which is offering Saturday-like service on Boxing Day.

For Christmas Eve, TTC rush-hour service will begin at noon, with reduced service later in the evening. The TTC will have Sunday-level service on Christmas Day and "reduced" morning and afternoon service on Dec. 27 and 28.

Banks closed

GO trains will be added for the afternoon of Christmas Eve, although some evening rush-hour trains will not run. On Christmas and Boxing Day, GO will run on weekend timetables.

Just don't plan on going to the bank, which will close at 3 p.m. Christmas Eve and remain closed on Dec. 25 and 26.

There will also be no mail delivery on Dec. 25 and 26, but business as usual every other day.

All Beer and LCBO stores will close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 24, and stay that way through Christmas. Selected stores will be open until 6 p.m. on Boxing Day and some will also extend their hours other days.

Tammy Robbinson of the city's Works and Emergency Services office says garbage pick-up will vary by community. Residents can call local collection offices for more information.
