| Snow is not common in Christchurch city. Although the hills behind the city usually get a small coating at a high level every winter, it usually only snows to sea level about once every 10 years. 2003 was one of those years. As a bonus we had it two days in a row. Following a storm on Friday night, we awoke on Saturday to a little snow which soon melted during the day although the day was cloudy with occasional snow shows. During Satuday night more snow fell and then the sky cleared and we had a frost, which froze the snow and meant it lasted all through the Sunday (a fine sunny day). The ponds on the railway were frozen solid for several days, and instead of the serface being flat, it was full of little lumps where hail frost as soon as it landed. Cold, but wonderful to look at. These pictures were taken on Saturday & Sunday. |
