RMC 4 RMC 4 OT     stats

The RMC Paladins streak of 5 straight years in the playoff ended on Saturday night as they only managed a tie with the Ryerson Rams in their final regular season game.

A win would have given the Paladins hope for a three way tie for the final play off spot, but despite all the pressure they put on the Ryerson net they could not put the game a way despite many different opportunities.

The game featured the desperation of a team struggling for their playoff hopes as combined both teams fired a combined 98 shots on net over the 65 minutes.  In the first RMC came out firing and took advantage of their special teams.  They jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at 2:26 when
Ryan Thebeault (Sydney,NS/Riverview HS) scored his first on the night with an assist from Greg McDonald (Ottawa,ON/South Ottawa Jr B).  Less then a minute later Ryerson tied it at one and then the same combination scored another power play goal to stake RMC to a 2-1 lead going into the intermission.

In the first RMC survived a scare early in the frame as they killed a 5 on 3 for 1:30.

The Rams took the wind out of RMCs sails early in the second as they tied the game up a 2 just 14 seconds in the frame on the fresh ice.  The Paladins had an excellent opportunity to put the game away early in the second as they were handed a 5 minute power play thanks to a checking from behind penalty.  However they could not get the puck past the Ryerson goaltender.  RMC was give a further gift as the power play was turned into a 5 on 3 for a full minute.  On the 5 on 3
Matt Fetzner (Royston,BC/Weyburn Redwings) made it 3-2 with an assist from Roman Srutek (Kanata,ON/Kanata Stallions) at 6:24.

The Rams came back to tie it at 11:39 and then Thebeault and McDonald struck again as they assisted on
Josh Fudges (Nepean,ON/Nepean Raiders) go ahead goal at 15:57.

In the third the Paladins were give two glorious opportunities to put the game away.  The first was a 5 on 3 that lasted the two full minutes.  That was then followed immediately by a full 5 minute power play, but the Paladins could not get the puck past the Ryerson goalie.   The only goal of the period came with under five minutes left when Ryerson tied the game with a power play goal of their own.

Offensivley Ryan Thebeault and Greg McDonald led the Paladins with three points each while
Blair Robertson (Outlook,SK/Quesnell Millionaires) was in net stopping 42 of 46 shots for the tie.

RMC continued to pressure for the win but could not solve anything in the last four minutes or into overtime.  With the tie the Paladins record goes to 7-16-4-1 for 19 points on the season.

RMC 2  U of T 2  OT    stats

The Paladins fought hard and kept their playoff hopes alive with a key come from behind 2-2 tie on Friday night at home against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.  This was a game where RMC needed to get at least one point to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The game had a playoff atmosphere from the opening puck drop as both teams battled hard and had plenty of scoring opportunities.  The U of T took advantage on an early power play opportunity as they scored at 1:56 of the first, just 30 seconds into their power play to take a 1-0 lead.  RMC had a couple of power play opportunities of their own but could not find the twine.  Late in the period the Paladins were on their heals as they played 6 straight minutes down a man after back-to-back-to-back penalties.  They managed to kill those penalties and head into the first intermission down 1-0.
In the second RMC came out an took the play to the U of T out shooting them 15-9 but it looked like they would remain down by one until
Ryan Thebeault (Sydney, NS/Riverview HS) tied the game at 1 with a minute twenty left in the frame.
In the third the Varsity Blues took advantage of an other early power play opportunity.  With a penalty carrying over from the last 30 seconds of the previous period, the Varsity Blues regained their lead at the one minute mark with a power player.  The Paladins season looked like it might be over but they continued to pressure the U of T goal and it finally payed off when
Roman Srutek (Kanata, ON/Kanata Stallions) tied the game with 1:03 remaining.  Matt Fetzner (Royston,BC/Weyburn Redwings) and Paul Bradley (Calgary,AB/Canmore Eagles) got the assists.
The two teams headed to OT without any results as both teams went for the win firing a total of nine shots on net in the extra frame.  Overall RMC out shot the U of T 40 to 36 on the evening.  The power play was 0 for 10 well they killed 7 of 9 penalties
In other playoff implicating OUA East Division match ups the Concordia Stingers tied the McGill Redmen.  With that win Concordia remains two points up on RMC with 20 points.  The Queens Golden Gaels kept pace with Concordia with a 3-1 win over the Ryerson Rams.  That win also gives Queens 20 points.
As we head into the final game of the season RMC is on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.  Queens and Concordia hold the final playoff spot.  This leaves RMC in a must win scenario in their final game against Ryerson on Saturday night and hope for a U of T victory over Queens on Saturday and an Ottawa Gee Gee win over Concordia on Sunday.  Should that scenario take place the there would be a complicated tie breaker as  Concordia and RMC would have 8 wins vs Queens 7 wins.  The RMC Queens season series is tied while RMC beat Concordia in the season series while the Queens Concordia series is tied.
