| 7 Jan Queens 4 RMC 3 stats In the final game of the regular season the Paladins dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to crosstown rivals the Queens Golden Gales in front of 1100 fans on Tuesday night. The game was key for both teams as a win would have clinched first place in the OUA Mid East for the Paladins, while Queens was looking to get the final playoff spot. The Paladins came out fired up and determined to take destiny into their own hands as they stormed out of the gates to take a 2-0 lead in the first period while out shooting Queens 14-11. RMC jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:41 into the period with a Roman Srutek (Kanata,On/Kanata Stallions) goal from Tyler McTavish (London,On/St Thomas Stars) and Pat McDonald (Calgary,Ab/Olds Grizzlys). Luke Pierce (Merrit,BC/Vernon Vipers) made it 2-0 at 19:24 on the power play from Brent Maurice (Alymer,PQ/Shawville Pontiacs) and Adam Purdy (Stittsville,On/Kanata Stallions). In a penalty filled second RMC could not bury the Golden Gaels despite several opportunities. Queens cut the lead to 2-1 with a short handed goal at 3:38. RMC restored their two goal lead at 6:15 when Roman Srutek notched his second power play goal on a 4 on 3 advantage. Queens then closed again to within one with a power play marker at 18:59. In the second intermission Queens coach Kirk Muller must have given his team an inspirational speech as the Golden Gales fought back to outshoot RMC 12-7. The Golden Gaels tied the game at 13:12 on a goal from John Clark. The game looked like it was going to head into overtime until the Golden Gaels pressure finally paid off with the game winner at 19:18. Pulling Matt Hartney (Burnaby,BC/University of Saskatchewan), the Paladins could not get the equalizer. RMC out shot Queens 35-30 for the game and went 2 for 7 on the power play and killed 7 of 8 shorthanded situations. With the loss RMC closes out a frustrating second half of the season where they went 2-4-1 after the Christmas break with tough losses against division opponents Queens and the U of T. RMC must now await the completion of next weeks games between the U of T and Ryerson. The U of T is four points back of RMC with two games in hand. Should the U of T win both games they will clinch first place in the OUA and force RMC into a first round playoff series against the University of Ottawa or UQTR. Should the U of T tie or lose a game that will clinch first place for RMC. With the win Queens collects the Carr-Harris Cup and now leads the series 12-7-1. |
