| RMC Hockey Takes Over First Place in OUA Mid-East | ||||
| The Paladins Hockey Team continued its solid play this past weekend by taking two road points against the strong Far East Division, and in doing so moved into sole possession of First Place with 10 points in 8 games. | ||||
| RMC 5, McGill 4 | ||||
| In front of a pro-RMC crowd in Montral on Saturday night, the Paladins showed tremendous character in netting a come-from-behind road victory against the #9-ranked McGill Redmen. The crowd was bolstered by approximately 30 Prep Year Cadets who drove up from St-Jean to show their College pride, and provided tremendous vocal and visual support to the Paladins. | ||||
| Both teams came out strong in the First Period, with McGill taking an early lead on Daniel Jacob?s slapshot that hit the post and went in. RMC responded after a great forecheck by MBA Students Tyler Middlebrook and Louis-Michel Charland enabled Charland to feed MA Student Jeff Todd in front of the net ? Todd buried his 3rd of the season to knot the game at 1-1. Late in the First, on McGill?s 3rd PowerPlay of the period, Benoit Martin got a fortunate bounce to give the Redmen a 2-1 lead after one period of play. | ||||
| The Paladins came out flying in the Second, and were rewarded early when rookie Josh Fudge (Nepean Raiders, CJHL) scored his first CIS Goal on a rebound to tie the game at 2-2. After McGill scored another seeing-eye goal on the PowerPlay, the Paladins responded when Tyler Middlebrook (Pickering, ON) scored on the PowerPlay to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the Third Period. | ||||
| In a well-refereed final period of play, the game remained tied until a vicious cross-check by McGill?s Chris Churchill-Smith on RMC?s First Year Class Senior Duaine Fetzner (Prince George Spruce Kings, BCHL) led to a 5-minute RMC PowerPlay. Fetzner, the winner of the Hope Medallion as the top First Year Cadet, did not wait long to exact revenge, and show his tremendous character and leadership. Picking up the puck in the Paladins zone, Fetzner rushed the puck wide into the McGill zone. Despite taking a vicious two-hand slash on the forearm that cut him open for 6 stitches, Fetzner held on to the puck, and buried a beautiful wraparound goal to give RMC a lead that would not be relinquished. After Nick Cregan (Cumberland Grads, CJHL) buried another PowerPlay Goal to make it 5-3, McGill was given a 5-on-3 PowerPlay advantage with 2 minutes left in the game. With McGill?s goalie on the bench, the Paladins killed off over a minute of the 6-on-3 disadvantage, before Jean-Michel Daoust of McGill finally scored with just under a minute remaining. RMC then killed off the final minute of 6-on-4 hockey to seal the win. | ||||
| Ottawa 8, RMC 2 | ||||
| In a game where the score did not reflect the play, Ottawa took advantage of their 15 PowerPlays, including three 5-on-3 advantages, to score 5 PowerPlay goals. RMC was only able to score a single PowerPlay goal on 8 chances, despite some good opportunities. | ||||
| Ottawa took an early 1-0 lead on the PowerPlay, taking advantage of the referee?s penchant for putting the Paladins in the box early in each period. Shortly thereafter, after Dion Lahoda (Merritt Centennials, BCHL) was penalized for tripping, Lahoda stepped out of the box to receive a breakaway pass from Tyler Middlebrook, and completely undressed the Gee-Gee netminder to score and knot the game at 1-1. Luke Pierce (Vernon Vipers, BCHL) recorded his first CIS point on the goal, as he picked up an Assist. After a two-minute Paladin lapse enabled Ottawa to take a 3-1 lead, RMC responded on the PowerPlay as Tyler Middlebrook buried a rebound off a Roman Srutek (Kanata Stallions, CJHL) slapshot from the point. The first period ended with Ottawa ahead 3-2 on the scoreboard and in PowerPlay opportunities. | ||||
| The Second Period started the same as the first, with RMC receiving a penalty but 5 seconds in. In a penalty-filled period that lacked any flow, Ottawa scored the only goal on a PowerPlay to take a 4-2 lead heading into the final frame. | ||||
| Determined to overcome the 4-2 deficit, RMC came out flying in the Third. After a dominating first shift, RMC was again penalized, with Ottawa taking advantage of the PowerPlay opportunity given them to take a 5-2 lead early in the period. The remainder of the game saw a questionable parade of Paladins to the penalty box, with Ottawa scoring on two 5-on-3 opportunities to seal an 8-2 win. | ||||
| Weekend in Review | ||||
| Leading the Paladins charge again were MBA Student Tyler Middlebrook (2G, 2A), whose 14 Points place him in 4th Overall in the CIS, and 1st in the OUA. Rookie Roman Srutek also continues to pile up the points, and now has 8 Pts (2G, 6A) on the season, while veteran Louis Charland (3A) had another strong weekend, and is regaining his offensive form. Duaine Fetzner (1G) and Jamie Routledge each had a strong weekend of play, while Team Captain Pat McDonald (Olds Grizzlys, AJHL) and rookie Luke Pierce (Vernon Vipers, BCHL) led the Paladins with their relentless physical play. | ||||
