TWO TECHNIQUES ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN PATTERNS

BY- AnimaeAriesGirl

Okie if you were re-directed from the "Cosplay Advice and Tips" page, let's recap! Here what I said:

Suggestion #2: Make your own pattern or adjust your own pattern so that it fits you properly as well as save you money. I have never bought a pattern from a fabric store because I knew that it wouldn't fit me or I was plain lazy to go out or too cheap to buy one. Okie what I do is the "Rub-off Technique." Found this in a SINGER book from Barnes and Nobles, so I do not claim the technique, but I do claim the second technique, which was inspired by the original rub-off technique, that I explain. So please note that, k ^_^? Oh and these techniques can be found under the "Tutorials" section of the site, btw if you would like to check it out!

Here I will explain the two techniques! So here we go!

This is the original version from the book, claimed by SINGER
To read more, in detail, about how SINGER describes "The Rub-Off Technique" be sure to check out their book, "101 Sewing Secrets by SINGER"

This is my description of the technique:

  1. What you have to do first is to take a piece of muslin (a type of cloth) and place it on top of the garment that you want to copy.

  2. Then pin the muslin to the garment to be copied. Put the pins where the seamlines and garment details are.

  3. Make sure to smooth out the layers of the garment and muslin so that when you trace it the pattern that is made is not distorted or messed up.

  4. Now use a soft lead pencil to mark where the pins are.

  5. After you are done, the muslin becomes your pattern. Trace the pattern onto the material you want to use for you costume (keep in mind to leave some allowance as you trace around the pattern and make sure to use the wrong side of the fabric so that the finished product doesn't turn out inside-out).

  6. Now put the pieces together like a puzzle...VIOLA!

This is the slightly modified and adapted version that I made, claimed by me, the AnimaeAriesGirl

Are you ready for my version?

  1. Find your favorite garment (it should have a good fit, perfect for the style of the costume you need to create).

  2. Flip it inside-out.

  3. Trace each garment section on to any type of scrap cloth. This will be your pattern.

  4. As in the A Version, trace the pattern onto the material you want to use for you costume (keep in mind to leave some allowance as you trace around the pattern and make sure to use the wrong side of the fabric so that the finished product doesn't turn out inside-out).

  5. Now put the pieces together like a puzzle...VIOLA!

You now have an exact copy of the garment that not only fits you, but can change around for your costume without ruining the original. You can also use the pattern over and over again for other costumes. Don't really understand? -__- No prob, I know I don't explain things well and trying it out can be confusing and frustrating at first. Just e-mail me or IM me on AIM, and I will run it by you step-by-step, with any specifics needed, okie?
