THE AKRAK FAMILY:
Pioneer Publishers of Belgian-French Comics in Turkey
The leading comics from the Belgian journal Spirou were largely carried out for a very long period in Turkey  by the akrak Family in the form of traced, black&white versions. In 1959, Adnan akrak's Bilgi Yaynlar [Bilgi Publications] began issuing the weekly Sipru [Spirou & Fantasio] and Red Kit [Lucky Luke] comics, joined a year later by Kk Prens [Johann & Pirlaut]. These were unlicensed publications. Sometime in mid-1960s, the Bilgi Yaynlar banner was dropped and the ownership of the magazines passed onto Bilge akrak.
While
Sipru and Kk Prens were short-lived (the latter probably because of the limited number of original adventures) not withstanding sporadic reprints, akrak continued Red Kit without a break into early 1970s. Other comics magazines issued by akrak include Viking, Alptekin (Turkish medieval heroics)), Altnkanat (Dago), Dago (which used 'Rakar' as filler space), Zapo (western) and Kansas (western), all these in 1969-70. The last comics put out by akrak appears to be Rakar (1974).
