In the fast growing world of The Rocky Horror Picture Show it's always good to know your roots and have an appreciation and understanding for them. The best example is the Montclair (General Cinemas) Theater in Montclair California.
Though it may not look like much now it has had it's days. Many people who have made it high up in the rocky world have found their start at the Montclair theater. Montclair is different from many of the other surrounding casts because their main focus is to have fun, so much so that if it means breaking character and running a muck through the audience than it must be done. That's what the audience would thrive on, what new would happen every week. Costumes and even knowing the part were not among the most important things. This past week Frank n Furter (Played by Trent Goodwin) performed the ending scene in his girl friends corset and his camouflage pants.
As a former cast member, Dave Harris said "If there ever was a trailer park Rocky this would be it."
Also common at this theater are people switching roles in the middle of the show and the audience just excepts it and anticipates when the next surprise would be. This week, the performing Columbia disappeared during a scene and was replaced by someone different for the rest of show. Mainly it's a haven for people that just want to have fun and enjoy Rocky without worrying about accuracy on any level. And it's one of the most creative places to be devirginized. From licking lotion off of bare skin to describing if you had to have sex with a barn yard animal what would it be and what could of noise would it make during an orgasm things get pretty interesting.
In this past year the theater has lost a good majority of it's cast and had to pull random virgins out of the audience to perform just to make sure parts were filled. There are many that you could never pull away from performing like Glenn, Harry, and Stephanie and the occasional alumni performances but on a regular week it can be sketchy for them to have all the parts filled. Last week a group of us went to watch the show and all ended up performing. It was an overall fun and entertaining show, as Montclair always is but afterwards we thought about it and were wondering what would have happened performing wise if we hadn't showed up. There are many people concerned about seeing this theater stay alive, even performers from other casts. Colleen from Midnight Insanity is making a good impression on everyone and might be the key factor in what helps build Montclair up. She has asked all of the members of MI to help out on Fridays and come perform to help get the show back on it's feet and she has helped tremendously to make sure there is a cast to perform every week.
My roots came from Montclair as well and I don't want to see it go under so I hope this out reach will affect all of us and we can keep this cast alive.
On a sad note: Montclair Playthings performed their last show on August 25th 2000. The Montclair Cenima closed 2 days later

Editors note: Amy Talaska is currently playing Janet at Midnight Insanity
