If WILD WILD WEST, the latest from MIB director Barry Sonnenfeld, had a better a script, it would probably have been a very exciting, fun-filled movie. Of course, it doesn't have a good script, and what is left is a movie that is filled with things that aren't too fun.
For instance, the bad guy is Dr. Loveless, who is planning to kill President Grant in order to take over the world. I'm sorry, but Kenneth Branagh was the wrong choice for this part. It's not just his fake Southern voice. That is only mildly distracting. He's just not believeable as a bad guy. The movie starts off pretty decent, then it takes a big nose dive downward, and then picks up a little bit of steam for the grand finale, which isn't really grand. The film's big effect machine is the mechanical, slow-moving 80-foot tarantula. Most people shredded this effect, but I thought it was kind of cool. It packs enough fire to smoke out an entire country. Will Smith is the other thing to look for in this movie. He tries his hardest to please the audience and he almost saves this movie, but he just doesn't have any help. Kevin Kline provides some funny lines, but he's out of place here. And Selma Hayek shouldn't have been in this movie to begin with. Okay, exactly what purpose does she serve here, besides looking beautiful? This movie was lambasted by critics and audiences. Grossing over $110 million and costing around $150 million, WILD WILD WEST was a box office bomb. Still, major weaknesses aside, this Big Willie Style movie is better than ARMAGEDDON and GODZILLA, two movies that really, really stunk. |
