What Dreams May Come (1998)

MPAA RATING: PG-13
RUNNING TIME: 113 Minutes

In the very dull, gloomy, and visually terrific What Dreams May Come, Robin Williams goes through pain, suffering, and happiness on Earth. He has lost his 2 children in an auto accident. 4 years later, Williams loses his life in an auto accident and he goes through pain, suffering, and happiness in heaven. Heaven, in Williams' mind, is like a large painting with lots of color. It is simply a gorgeous scenery. Brilliant effects aside, the 2 hour (though it seemed like 3) movie just seemed very complicated and hard to follow.

Other than the effects, nothing else about the film is worth bragging about. Williams was outstanding in his dramatic role in Good Will Hunting, but in this film, he just doesn't fit the drama costume. Maybe the most suspenseful part is when he goes to find his wife. She has committed suicide and winds up in hell. The scenes there are just as good as the scenes of heaven.

The ending to the film is about as bad as I have seen in a movie. It was too far fetched and just didn't fit the mold of the movie. It's definitely in the long line of films that "could" have been great. Lacking in too many areas and having an extremely weird story drops this movie's value big time. If only the viewing of this movie had really been a dream...
