| That Thing You Do! (1996) |
| CAST: Tom Everett Scott, Johnathon Schaech, Liv Tyler, Steve Zahn, Tom Hanks
DIRECTOR: Tom Hanks MPAA RATING: PG RUNNING TIME: 110 Minutes STUDIO: 20th Century Fox |
| Tom Hanks wrote and directed this film, his first. The title comes from The Wonders' hit song, which is played 11 times during the movie. It's as catchy as the band members personalities. Steve Zahn, who is on his way to stardom, offers a funny performance. Hanks depicts a record label manager to perfection, even though he doesn't show up much in the film. The best parts are when the band begins to develop and the song catches on. After that point, the story begins to fall flat just as the band begins to break up because of personal problems. In all, it's above average material that is worth a look, but probably not more than once. |
