Any time a movie has been on the shelf for over a year after it was made, you have to have your doubts about it. Surprisingly, THE 13TH WARRIOR (based on Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead) isn't too wretched.
The movie is filled with numerous cliches. When it's learned that a band of cannibal-like monsters, The Mendol, are slaughtering everything in sight, it's up to 13 warriors to stop them. Of course, the good guys have to seek out an "old witch" to find this out. The 13th warrior must be different from the other 12, who consist of hulking viking-like figures. Antonio Banderas is an Arab who tags along. The battle scenes are very exciting, even though in 2 of them, you can't see hardly anything. And the scenery is great to look at. The Mendol look less and less mysterious as the movie plays on. The film also starts out a little slow, as it takes roughly 40 mintues for anything to happen. This movie was delayed for over a year. Probably because of all the inside problems. With a budget of over $100 million, the movie was a box office disappointment. Director John McTiernan wasn't happy with the final cut of the film. I think I agree with him. |
