"Supernova" is one of the best looking Sci-fi B-movies I have ever seen. The $60 million that the film cost sure didn't go to waste in the effects department. Too bad no money was spent on a script or characters.

What we have here is a medical ship coming to the rescue of a another ship that's in trouble. The "Nightingale" must perform a dimension jump in order to save the ship.

The person who made the distress call comes aboard, but he's not alone. With him, is a supernova, something that can destroy the entire galaxy.

So basically what you have here is a sci-film borrowing a little from "Alien", "Event Horizon", and any other film in the genre. But it borrows more from the bad ones.

Spader and Bassett pretty much get to escape the criticism, but the rest of the crew is as stiff as a board. Not only are they bad actors, but the script they were given is pretty bad.

Save for the special effects, the rest of the movie is pretty dull. Thankfully, the last 25 minutes will wake you up.

It's surprising this film even got released. I'm guessing it was probably completed in early 1999 (wasn't released until January 2000). "Supernova" also went through a few directors, and even Francis Ford Coppola stepped into the editing room to try and make the film watchable. Did he succeed? Well, let's just say the film isn't total crap.
