Kevin Bacon's self-proclaimed "ordinary" and "stupid" life is about to change. After being hypnotized by his sister-in-law at a party, Bacon begins to see hallucinations. These disturbing images are a call out by a mysterious ghost who seeks help and redemption. Bacon and his son are the only ones who can see or hear the ghost. It's up to Bacon to right the wrong in the ghost's past. If he doesn't carry out the wishes, he may never escape the terror.
Kevin Bacon gives one of his best performances ever. And the supporting cast is strong. Seeing Bacon go from a simple, hard-working man to a complete wreck makes you root for the guy. He is one actor who never seems to get the credit he deserves. He is simply a very talented actor, one who is flexible in his roles, something all actors strive for. Directed by David Koepp, STIR OF ECHOES borrows bits and pieces from THE SHINING and POLTERGEIST. Although he has more experience writing, Koepp has actually created an entertaining ghost story. It's one that is creepy, not gory. It is much scarier than the other ghost story, THE SIXTH SENSE. ECHOES wasn't near as successful as THE SIXTH SENSE, but I'll take Kevin Bacon's seeing of ghosts over Haley Joel Osment's any time. This isn't a perfect film. It does have its flaws. There are 2 or 3 subplots that never quite get developed and the ending is lackluster at best. Still, this is quite a disturbing film and the story is believable. If someone asks to hypnotize you, make sure there aren't any ghosts around. |
