In what is without Roger Moore's finest outing as 007, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME centers around an aquatic madman who wants to blow up the world with his nuclear weapons. And on the side, he likes to devour up subs that get in his watery way.
The formula is as simple as it always is: opening stunt scene, the Bond babes, introduce the villian, have some action, and the big finale. But these all work well, and they go nicely together with the great photography. The desert shots are very good. The Bond series has a first in this film: the gimmick villian. This one is played by Richard Kiel, the steel-toothed Jaws. Simple-minded, but powerful and deadly, Jaws was a pleasant welcome to this movie. He was so popular that the producers decided to bring him back in the next film, MOONRAKER. The opening teaser scene is the ski sequence. It has to be one of the most exciting in the Bond franchise. Also of note is the huge finale, which sports tons of gunfire and explosions. Moore may have not been the best Bond, but he fares very well in this terrific adventure.
