An underwater squad unit gets summoned to the mid-Pacific when U.S. officials discover a 300 year old spacecraft. The group's job is to find out the spacecraft's origin. Little do they know what terror they are about to encounter.
Sphere comes from the prestigeous author Michael Crichton. The cast is the movie's strongest point. Hoffman, Stone, Jackson, Schreiber, and Coyote all deliver fine performances. Their safe trip begins to turn into nightmares when they encounter a mysterious sphere, which they believe is an alien lifeforce. What causes the terror is the mystery of the film. This movie didn't exactly receive praises from the major critics and was considered a box office disapointment. I actually found it to be thrilling throughout most of the picture, though the last 30 minutes dragged a bit. Hey, this isn't Levinson's best work, but he strings together a story that is pretty entertaining. Had it not been for the cast, this film would have been a total disaster. |
