A Simple Plan (1998)
CAST: Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, Bridget Fonda, Brent Briscoe
DIRECTOR: Sam Raimi
MPAA RATING: R
RUNNING TIME: 123 Minutes
STUDIO: Paramount

3 friends manage to stumble onto to a crashed airplane. What they find inside is going to change their lives from now on. Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton) and Hank (Bill Paxton) are brothers who, along with Jacob's friend Lou (Brent Briscoe) find over $4 million dollars in the airplane. Their "simple" plan is for Hank to hold the money until spring, and if no one is asking about it, they will split it 3 ways. Sometimes simple plans can get complicated

What is so fascinating about this story is all of the twists and turns it has. You never know what's going to happen next. Its 2 Oscar nominations (Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay) are well deserved. The movie should have gotten more. Any ways, the performances are strong, with Thornton's simple-minded character the standout. He puts on a show for us. Paxton is strong as the lead character, something he has failed to do in the past. He really does better than expected. Bridget Fonda, who plays Paxton's wife, is also in the fold. She plays a big part in the film.

Writing wise, this film is tops. With a terrific story line and all of the plot twists, the script is easily one of the best-penned in 1998. Tricky ending helps fuel A Simple Plan's Fargo-like atmosphere to be one of the best films of 1998. Greed is a wonderful thing.
