A '40s tale of how tough and brutal prison life was. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman offer fine performances. Great story with a good feeling of self-achievement and hope. You almost feel you are in the prison with these characters. Director Frank Darabont's take on prison life is very realistic. The warden and the officers are mean and you dislike them the first time you see them. Their appearance and personality make the prison's setting darker.
