Would you spend 3 years in a Malaysian prison in order to save a friend from a death sentence? That�s the question that is asked to Sheriff (Vince Vaughn) and Tony (David Conrad). Joaquin Phoenix, Vaughn, and Conrad are 3 guys relaxing in �paradise�, also called Malaysia by them. They have their women, their beer, their hash...they have everything. When both Vaughn and Conrad leave to go back to their boring lives in New York, Phoenix stays behind to help save an endangered species.
It�s been 2 years since they left, and Phoenix is now spending his time in a Malaysian prison. His crime was having too much hash than what the law required. He is about to receive a death sentence in 8 days, unless his 2 buddies return to Malaysia and serve 3 years each in the prison, which will allow Phoenix�s dismissal back to New York. Heche is Phoenix�s lawyer and she spends most of the movie trying to convince the two to go back and save their friend. They must return to paradise, though prison is far from being called paradise. Vaughn and Heche�s chemistry is more than above-average in this film. Vaughn�s performance is definitely worth noting, as is Heche�s, who seems to get better in each film she is in. The story is the key in this movie, as it does raise a very interesting question. How important is your friend's life? |
