When it comes to playing rich, greedy businessmen, Michael Douglas tops the list. He makes this movie work. From the first time you see him in the film, you know he's up to no good. He has that look of power. He plays Steven Taylor, a man whose business is failing and he's about to be wiped out of money. Of course, his lovely wife (Gwyneth Paltrow), is worth over $100 million. It's easy to tell that they don't get along. It's easy to figure that out because she's having an affair with a criminal turned painter, played by Viggo Mortensen. Once Douglas finds out about the affair, he hires Mortensen to kill his wife, for a hefty sum of money. Mortensen does a rather surprising good job as the painter/lover/hired gunman.
The movie could have been a little better, especially if the ending was a little more thrilling. But in all, this was an above average remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic Dial M for Murder. Most remakes usually turn out to be disasters, but this one dodged the bullet. |
