THE MUMMY unofficially kicks off the 1999 Summer Blockbuster season. Thank goodness. This kind of remake of the Karloff classic is more along the lines of an Indiana Jones type adventure. People are hunting for treasure; they set off traps, and awaken a really pissed 3,000-year-old mummy.
Brendan Fraser is our hero in this movie. Though he's not as fun to watch as Harrison Ford was in the Jones movies, he's still above average. Stephen Sommers (Deep Rising) keeps the action pretty much ongoing. There are a couple of draggy parts, but that's to be expected. Some of the shots of the dessert were simply amazing, nice direction for the most part. His one big drawback is the overwhelmingly use of tongue-in-cheek humor. What's wrong with it? There's too much of it! Not everything in a movie needs to be funny. Our heroes are cracking jokes when they should be scared to death. I know I would be scared if I made an "un" dead guy angry. I certainly wouldn't say "boy, he's kinda cranky". There are just way too much stupid jokes. They didn't sound as bad as ARMAGEDDON, major plus. On the plus side are the terrific special effects. And there are plenty of them. The mummy (Arnold Vosloo) looked pretty cool for the most part, although he's better when he forms to his original self. He's not the one Karloff played either. He doesn't move as slow as a snail. This guy can form into other shapes, unleash flesh-eating bugs, and he has a nifty way of leaving a room. The bugs are also something to see. The scenes with them are probably the most frightening, though they shouldn't give you nightmares. In all, this film follows the formula of other big blockbuster pictures. It's not going to please everyone, but for most fans of action and excitement, it delivers. Fraser looks to stick as an action star. THE MUMMY will not win any awards for acting or for writing, but it should put smiles on people's faces because it's a fun ride. It's a good pre-Star Wars adventure. |
