When a Senator dies, Mr. Smith (James Stewart) is summoned to replace him. A young man he is, Smith has to put up with embarrassment among other things with other corrupt Senators. When he is able to pass a bill that will allow a boys camp to be built, he receives even more unwelcome attention from Senators who want a dam built in the same spot as his camp.
This is one of the top 10 films of all-time. Stewart may have given his best performance in this picture. Starting out scared and unsure of himself, Stewart's Senator character begins to grow and stand firm in his beliefs. Classic performances all around from Stewart, Claude Rains, and Jean Arthur.
This is easily Frank Capra's best film. He makes the scenes flow with ease. An added bonus to his work is the ability to have an A+ cast. The script is sharply written as well. Smart, delightful, and entertaining is what Sidney Buchman had in mind when he wrote this masterpiece.
Amazing in every aspect, this film is just simply phenomenal. Had it not been for Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, this movie would have won the Oscar for Best Picture. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is part of what most consider to be the very best year for movies.
