Terence Stamp is Wilson, an ex-con who has just got out of prison. He's on a mission to find out how his daughter died. His only connection to the death is a music promoter named Teddy Valentine (Fonda). Fonda is very difficult to find, so Stamp struggles in finding where could be.
Soderbergh does things in this movie that hasn't been done in a long time. The movie uses alot flashbacks. In the scenes where Stamp is recounting past events, Soderbergh has taken clips from another Stamp movie and blended them in with this one. It's a very effective tool in storytelling. I wished more filmmakers would do this. Great idea. Soderbergh also does alot of voiceover with his characters. Many scenes, a character is talking, yet he has other scenes playing. It's kind of confusing, but originality is better than the standard shooting methods. The movie is not exactly a thriller. It's more or less a chance to give Stamp and Fonda valuable screen time. Stamp is excellent has Wilson. He has several subtle, yet funny lines. He's a guy you don't want to mess with. Fonda is great as Valentine, a slippery, scared rich man who really has no idea why Stamp is after him. With a great cast, and 2 Oscar nominated actors, The Limey is a movie that you will enjoy with multiple viewings. |
