Dr. Ethan Powell (Anthony Hopkins) has supposedly killed 2 park rangers in Africa. He used to be an Anthropologist. Now he's a raving psychotic who hasn't spoken a word in 2 years. Confined in a mental institute, it's up to a young shrink (Gooding Jr.) to tap into Powell's mind and find out the truth.

INSTINCT had good intentions, but falls short of being a good film. It does have its strengths. Gooding does a more than capable job as the young, yet willing doctor. And the script, though held together with glue, is somewhat decent. The problem with INSTINCT is Hopkins, who is Hannibal Lecter with long silky hair. It takes about 40 minutes before he speaks, and it looks as though he's sleepwalking in this role. For supporting help, Donald Sutherland plays Donald Sutherland. A role he's quite accustomed too.

There are moments of suspense. And that mental hospital will appear to most as a complete knockoff of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST. Gooding's performance and a few shocks make this above-average material, but nothing more than that.
