Hoosiers (1986)
CAST: Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper, David Neidorf
DIRECTOR: David Anspaugh
MPAA RATING: PG
RUNNING TIME: 115 Minutes
STUDIO: Orion

If there is a "basketball state", it has to be Indiana. Hoosiers is the story based on a small Indiana high school team who beats the odds and wins the State Championship. A new coach (Hackman) is brought in to try and turn the team around from a sub-par season. He doesn't exactly get a warm greeting from the town, as his methods are much different than what they're used to. Once he gets the team on track, there is nothign that can stop them on their journey to surprise everyone and win the title.

This story is very simple, yet it still feels fresh with each viewing. Hackman is sensational as the coach, giving a real, edgy performance. Dennis Hopper, who is a drunken father to one of the players, is great. His performance netted him a well-deserved Oscar nomination. This movie differs from other sports films because of the characters. They're easy to like and quickly begin to root for them. They appear real and not just some stereotype that we've seen in other films.

The movie earned 2 nominations, the one for Hopper and for Jerry Goldsmith's uplifting score. It should've received Picture, Actor (Hackman), and Screenplay as well. It follows all the elements that all feel-good movies have. Definitely a great movie for the whole family. And it can be enjoyed by non-sports fans as well. THE best sports movie ever made.
