Jan De Bont's attempt to remake this 1963 classic about a haunted house is pretty much a failed attempt. The problem with the movie is it's not scary. Sure, there may be 2 or 3 spots where something jumps out, but for a movie to be about a "haunted" house, it just doesn't get the job done.
This movie is one of those rare occassions where the main stars are outdone by the secondary ones. Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones are horribly hollow. Thank goodness Owen Wilson is actually funny. Lili Taylor does her best to play the innocent victim. She does a fairly good job. It looks as though Neeson doesn't want to be there. Of course, this script would make anyone look bad. The only redeeming value this movie has is the house itself. Sporting great f/x, the house is simply awesome. Too bad it's a wimp when it comes to fright. The effects look real, as it's not really easy to see what's on a big green wall. If the teaser trailer had lived up to expectations, then this would have been a great movie. Note to De Bont, stick to cinematography. His last two movies are THE HAUNTING and SPEED 2. Ouch. |
