Based on the Shirley Jackson novel "The Haunting of Hill House", The Haunting is a highly successful horror film. 4 persons including a parapsychologist visit the house, which has been blamed for deaths in the past. Looking for supernatural events is the task they are after. The story's central character is a skeptic female(Julie Harris) who gets the bulk of the house's mistreatment. Her psyche is questioned throughout the movie.
The direction by Robert Wise is what makes this movie superb. The outside shots of the house are splendid, giving off a real sense of terror. Bumps, creaks, innocent laughter, and frightful music placed in the proper proportion help build one of the true classic thrillers.
