Gods and Monsters (1998)
CAST: Ian McKellen, Brendan Fraser, Lynn Redgrave
DIRECTOR: Bill Condon
MPAA RATING: NR
RUNNING TIME: 105 Minutes
STUDIO: Lions Gate Film

The story about the last days of director James Whale (Ian McKellen). Concentrations fall mainly on Whale's homosexuality and the hauntings of his past, which are displayed through flashbacks. McKellen excels at the highest rate. This is the role he has been waiting for, since he can best relate with this character.

Snubbed of a Best Picture nomination, Gods and Monsters is at often times witty, dramatic, and sometimes down right hysterical. Brendan Fraser is McKellen's gardener, who slowly builds a friendship with the director, who was responsible for Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. Looks as though Fraser is way past his days of playing popular roles about frozen cavemen. Lynn Redgrave sparkles as McKellen's long servant. She brightens up every scene.

A small film indeed, Gods and Monsters forces you to think about Whale and what he accomplished. British actors fair very well in film and McKellen is no exception. His performance as Whale is one of the best I have seen in 1998. Now you know who you can thank when you watch a classic like Frankenstein.
