The premise of GALAXY QUEST is based on the cheesiness of the very popular STAR TREK series. The QUEST show hasn't been on since 1982 and all that is left are a bunch of aging actors who do nothing but go to the "cult-like" conventions, where they painfully sign autographs all day and have to listen to nutty fans talk about different episodes. Their lives change when a group of aliens, called Thermians, summon them to their ship to help them stop an attack from their arch enemy, Sarris. It's up to the rag-tag crew, led by Tim Allen, to help the Thermians out.

My favorite part of the movie was the convention, but once the crew gets on the ship, things are still enjoyable. These guys have no idea as to what to do. The Thermians based the ship and its functions on the tv show, which they refer to as the GALAXY QUEST "historical documents". That's probably re-runs to everyone else.

You know how its all going to turn out, but this is still a fun adventure. The cast especially helps out. While Allen is pretty good at his deliberate overacting, al la Captain Kirk, its Rockwell, Weaver, and Rickman who steal the show. Not only is the cast good, but there is quite a bit of action and some terrific special effects, courtesy of Industrial Light & Magic. The movie's message is cliched, but the idea is still original. And you don't have to be a Trekkie to enjoy the movie either.
