Will Smith is the king of 4th of July weekend. It must be said that Kevin Costner is the king of baseball movies. BULL DURHAM and FIELD OF DREAMS are very popular and good films, but FOR LOVE OF THE GAME doesn't entertain as much as the other to. Its main problem is the phony love story that is the movie's backbone.

Costner is Billy Chapel, a pitcher who is at the end of his career. He's pitching his last game and the movie uses flashbacks to describe his damaged relationship between he and his on again, off again girlfriend (Preston). The movie could've been edited a little better, as it switches gears faster than Jeff Gordon.

The script isn't anything to brag about, but at least it does have some funny spots. The best scenes are between Costner and his catcher (Reilly). Those two are the ones that have the believable chemistry, certainly more than Costner and Preston.

Sam Raimi was the man behind the camera. This guy is a great director and he just doesn't have much to work with for this movie. I'm sure a studio executive probably forced Raimi to change the movie some. I know this isn't is 100% vision of a baseball movie. There is some entertainment to be found, especially the life-like baseball scenes, but the movie's back story simply isn't interesting.
