Tom Cruise plays a young lawyer who is one of the hottest picks to get. He's been getting good offers from large firms, but one small firm in Memphis has made him an offer he can't refuse. So he and the wife head to Memphis to work at the tiny, yet wealthy firm. They have 41 lawyers, all married with kids. They believe in a strong family.

That's one sign that the Mafia runs the joint. Once Cruise learns of this, he begins to realize that his life may be in danger. Ed Harris is an FBI agent who has been itching to nail this firm, and needs Cruise's help. Of course, when you're dealing with the mob, it's a very risky thing to try and turn them in.

This all makes for a very interesting movie. The film is not without its flaws. The length is way too long. The director, Sydney Pollack, has never been accused of a great editor. There are plenty of drab scenes that should have been cut to shreds. Still, there's plenty of redeeming qualities. The performances are great, with Cruise, Hackman, and Brimley being the highlights. And those last 25 minutes are down right nerve-racking.

The movie was based on the popular John Grisham novel. It sticks to the book's story until the end. THE FIRM was the third highest grossing movie of 1993 with over $154 million. Flawed, but still enjoyable.
