"The first rule of fight club is: do not talk about fight club." "The second rule of fight club is: DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!" Those statements come from Brad Pitt, who is a co-creator of fight club. Fight club is a way for men who are fed up with their boring lives and senseless jobs they go to. It's a violent vacation that feels like it belongs in the Twilight Zone.
Edward Norton, suffering from Insomnia, needs a way to get out of his horrible life. He's lost, trapped, whatever you want to call it. After becoming addictive to joining various support groups, which range from testicular cancer members to tuberculosis, he meets Brad Pitt, who happens to make and sell soap for a living. Together, both men come up with the zany fight club, where you beat your opponent senseless and then feel good about it. Nutty so far? Well, the club is only a small part of the movie. It's the first trip through David Fincher's demented amusement park. Fincher's thoughts and visions that are seen throughout the 2 hours and 20 minutes of film is a complete test for the mind. Compared to FIGHT CLUB, PULP FICTION and SEVEN seem like those Martha Stewart cooking shows. Fincher is the mad scientist and the audience is the scared, yet curious victim. We don't know what's going on, but all we can think about is what's coming up next. As for the performances, they're great. Pitt has fun, something he hasn't had since SEVEN. With bombs like MEET JOE BLACK and SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET, Pitt's career is back on track. Helena Bonham Carter is strong in her supporting role. It's really a different turn for her. And Edward Norton continues to show why he will be one of the greatest actors when he retires. The guy can play any role, something many actors can't and won't ever do. Flexibility, flexibility, flexibility. The film is as brutal as any movie I've seen. The fights are authentic and very bloody. FIGHT CLUB requires at least 2 viewings to answer the questions you'll have. After the first viewing, you'll feel like you've been in a fight. |
