Enemy of the State (1998)
CAST: Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, Barry Pepper
DIRECTOR: Tony Scott
MPAA RATING: R
RUNNING TIME: 128 Minutes
STUDIO: Buena Vista

The scariest part about this thriller is it could possibly come true. Will Smith plays an attorney who has been given a secret videotape, which contains vital information involving a murder. Jon Voight is the bad guy, again. He plays a politician who is responsible for the murder of Congressman, who has turned down the idea of Voight's new bill. The bill will enable the NSA, National Security Agency, the ability to tap every phone line and listen to every air waveit will also boost Voight's career.

As far as thrillers go, this one ranks high on the scale. It's not long before the adrenaline begins to flow. That is a normal trademark from Jerry Bruckheimer (Armaggedon), who produced the film. He and director Tony Scott keep the pace boiling like lava. The reason I say the movie could be true in a few years is because of all the secret spy gadgets that the NSA uses. They use very advanced equipment running from "bugs" to satellites.

Gene Hackman also surfaces during the film. He is the one who aids in Smith's flees of the NSA. He's a former NSA agent who happens to know a few things that the NSA also knows. He also has the same type equipment they use, etc. He gives another of his grumpy performances, which are good. The only thing that keeps him from looking like himself in any other picture is those darn nerdy glasses. Smith continues to develop into the action star. He is easily one of the biggest stars today, and those $20 million offers will be rolling in very soon, if they haven't already.

This is one of the most thrilling movies I've seen this year. These are the kinds of movies that really scare you because you never know what is real and what is not. There's no aliens, or giant monsters, it's just spy stuff. Who knows, in a few years, you might be the target of a secret NSA project and become the enemy of the state.
